Classic D&D Treasure? A trap?


Assuming the D&D model of small creatures wearing down heroes on the levels closest the surface. Then later the big monsters, rare, would finish the guys off should they venture too deep. Yet treasure seems odd?

Is it merely stuff the bad guys collect and hold? Or could it be placed by the wizard-lich to weight down the heroes, add to fatigue, cause strife, etc. (I lost many a character to greedy pvp.)

How many heroes would give-up when they are rich? How many would toss the rope or torch for a brick of gold, a bronze, gilded shield?

The wizard-lich (owner) of dungeon would truly need gold for what? To power surface minions? There doesn't seem to be a need for trade in most of the fantasy designs I've explored.
