Lots o' different vowels

If I remember correctly from my phonetics classes, American English has at least 12 different vowel phonemes, and that's not getting into dipthongs....

*one Google search later*

Depending on the dialect, English contains between 16 and 24 vowel phonemes and dipthongs, which is far in excess of most languages (Japanese only has 22 phonemes, period), so, y'know, it probably would be a good idea to break up English vowel sounds into more characters, but all attempts to reform the alphabet over the years have focused on removing symbols, not adding them!

Incidentally, the earliest forms of the Greek alphabet had 22 letters, expanded out to 31 (33 if one adds in one particular dialect), then eventually contracted to 26, then again to 24.
