Serious question


The article claims the letter "ash" was "somewhere between a and e, like in cat". "Cat" is the poster child for the short a sound. Every school child learns "a as in cat". That doesn't sound like somewhere between "a" and anything - it's solidly right on "a". Am I missing something? Does anyone pronounce cat differently than the traditional short a sound?
