In order to survive the flight to Mars, you need to fill the skin of your spacecraft with a fourteen foot thickness of water (or ice). Tons of water. So you'll first need hundreds of missions to bring the water insulator. Build the ship in orbit I guess? Something we've never done as a species.
Mars is drivel, unless you decide on robots. Mars colony (robots) versus Mankind, a sci-fi adventure.
The solar potential of Mars is also limited. The moon is a solar inferno! Enough to microwave the excess back to earth as a second light source for night solar.
