Solo Play is a thing now ..... (in regard's to another post)
Message:
A lot of the internet peeps are moving to solo play.
Basically, play the games solo and act as both Ref and Player. Does the bandit I just killed have anything in his pocket? Roll. Roll. No.
Are the Tree Men hiding something? Roll. Roll. Yes.
What are they hiding? Roll. Roll ... a fully operational death star!!!! ... oops ... wrong table.
Because people can't get together (for whatever reason) and the virtual table tops have issues, people are resorting to a new style of gaming.
Red commented below ... sure ... because he's old school like that. It would not be an issue. Open the DMG and off you go.
But, the new crowd is trying to find something different. (It's not different of course, but ... one searches for something one thinks they do not have.)
I've watched a number of channels of various Internet peeps playing solo ... stumbled on by chance. Mostly because they tend to pull out the old, old games and it's nice to see them.
The Free-Style system is particularly well suited for that style of play. The mechanics are straight forward (roll 2d8 against a difficulty level). And, many of the tables and Q&Ds are built in to the material. Character generation is quick and "evocative". The skills define the action in their names. With a few flips of the card, you have a full story and mechanics to game it all out.
There are some developing solo games and "diary" style games. More power to them I guess.
We were solo playing "Wooden Ships and Iron Men" so many years ago, that anyone would think this is a new thing is shocking. Wooden risk pieces on a map of cardboard and marker make Game of Thrones boring.
That said, the solo games are actually a lot more interesting as "adventures" than your standard Mercer offerings. The communication is more efficient. And the null brains playing Mercer's games (said with complete love to them) give me skull cancer. The thoughts of the insects scurrying in the offal don't amuse me. (Forgive if the tone sounds harsh, I'm just saying ... the content is dumb. At least the solo gamers are stretching a little.)
Welcome to the future.
Yours,
IronConrad
