Motive in a large group does create a problem ....
Message:In the fantasy game, a group of characters plods on together to overcome some known objective .... or ... just to get more lootz.
In horror, it doesn't make sense why people would stay together in most cases.
In the case we recently experienced, we went together to find the missing professor. Yet, we would have been equally effective if we just split up. After the first criminal act, smart people would scatter.
In the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, they had to stay together even though they knew betrayal lay at the end, because each had 1/3 of the secret to the gold.
In CoC, there is no pot of gold at the end. Well, there might be gold but it will be used to pierce your important organs (which is to say all of them).
Perhaps my understanding is wrong but I got the idea that what made the Call of Cthulu particularly horrific was not just the the game was rigged but that humanity was so insignificant in the big scheme to not matter. The ancient ones didn't bother to try to hide their schemes because you were so insignificant as to not matter to them. In fact, you couldn't even understand them.
Our minds cannot unravel that truth ... and are driven mad.
You can't win. You can't break even. You can't quit. Sucks to be you.
Yours,
