Might've actually played more Trillion Credit Squadron than "Character Traveller."
GM let me modify a rule. I was allowed to remove the gear for fighter recovery on the rationalization that the carrier had to land on the surface to reload fighters. Well... I was building a planetary invasion fleet, and allowing that tweak let me take the fighter compliment from 50 to 150 per ship. Fleet of six. Oh yeah, and they all had Type-S spinal mount plasma cannons (biggest gun in the game), another 200 laser turrets, 50 rail guns and a bunch of sand casters.
Skimped on the jump drives.
Basically a fleet that had to win the battle to invade, or lose all its fighters and not have fuel to retreat. Do or die.
Well... I had some support tankers. And a few stock vessels from the Fighting Ships supplement.
My design stood undefeated across the campaign.
Yeah, I don't remember any of the Third Imperium stuff. My copies predate that and we were a buncha kids rolling on the tables and winging it from there - modifying rules (really, not having recovery tubes for fighters was unbalancing). Who knew we were "playing it right?"
