The loot went into a pile for the group. (It made no sense otherwise.)
The loot in Hex Crawl is anti-climactic of sorts.
It runs in cycles ... sometimes you are on the right cycle and sometimes you aren't.
In Gygax D&D, the Wizard could hang in the back and avoid the stabby stab.
Gygax D&D works not because it was an elegant design (perhaps it was), it works because gamers put themselves in those roles and gain loyalty and tales of adventure. We helped the Wizard because the Wizard might one day throw a fireball but also ... Team. (Even in an imaginary world, we want to be part of something bigger than ourselves.)
I would not worry characters progressing too fast ... even if you got 1 XP per roll, you can't make 15 rolls in an hour with six players. And, you don't get an XP each roll. Don't solve a problem until you have it.
