Less a "fan film," than...
Message:...almost official.
The D&D cartoon was canceled in its third production season during production of the series finale. "Satanic Panic" got the show, not ratings. 27 of 29 episodes were completed.
This script is the intended series finale.
The screenwriter for the episode, Michael Reeves, functions as (uncredited) executive producer for this video. The dialog was taken from an audio reading of the script with a professional (but not original) cast for the DVD. Reeves managed to get Sheila/Bobby's original actress back to loop her lines for this version. Reeves also had access to the digitized source recordings from the DVD remaster and the editors could cobble together the visuals from the highest quality footage.
Lot of time on rotoscoping and patching BG elements to get everyone on consistent backgrounds. But, as Conrad said the animation was "similar" to the original style, I note again, it's all animation directly from the series. Inconsistencies between shots are from sourcing footage from different episodes where studio X might have been off-model compared to studio Y.
Ironically this film was posted with the consent of the original studio, but the music itself is, of course, licensed by ASCAP, and one of the composers demanded royalties. In this version that particular composer's work was replaced with other tracks.
Always appreciated Presto's fate. Felt right to me.
