Well ... perhaps not.
But, if healing is easy then it becomes bland.
A healing potion should be worth a King's Ransom.
The cities should grant a point of succor if nothing else because of a warm meal and not sleeping on the ground.
The trick then is to balance the random damage received against the typical hit point count.
20 hit points = 7 d4 hits.
But, make it too deadly and players resist going into areas where damage is possible.
A tough conundrum.
(One of my favorite dungeons is one you ran way back when where the biggest monster was the first monster. the next biggest, the next, until the last fight was with a goblin or other meager foe. Normally, one would not fear such a thing.)
