Yes, the term is a pejorative. To say something is a mere comic hero is to suggest it is juvenile. Wrestling also appeared in first comics. Sure, life lessons and good vs evil soap opera but written for an audience mostly illiterate and untested. In the Age of Shoddy that means the majority of the males, perhaps all humans on the planet.
