Good tech demo. Showcase for Shatner
Message:Shatner provided the mo-cap for movie-era Kirk, which is why it ALMOST works in most shots. Shatner has always had an expressive face.
Sam Witwer did the mo-cap for TOS Kirk, which is why it didn't work at all. Witwer got the slouch, but he can't move his face like Shatner.
Otherwise, I guess this was supposed to represent Kirk's life flashing before his eyes as he dies, or something? Oh, look, Robin Curtis as Savvik, and the creators intend that Vulcan behind her to be Spock and Savvik's kid after a lil ponn'far on Genesis, but I had to read the BTS interviews to get that. CG Spock doesn't look any better than Zombie Tarkin from Rogue One.
And I'm gonna tell you why - it's not about the CG model, texture, and rendering, it's performance. Period.
The "MCU" Hulk is the best Hulk solely because Mark Ruffalo plays both - and he incorporates Bannerisms into Hulk which make clear this is basically a split personality situation with crossover elements.
Same reason why movie-era Kirk in this ALMOST worked. Shatner drove the performance, which means the face - the subtle bit - had a Shatner performance. Where the performance falls apart is the full shots of Kirk walking - because 90 year old Shat doesn't move like 60-year old Shat.
Better than Discovery (seasons 1 and 2, all I've seen).
Yours,
IronMike
