Catan remains popular but most games get one pass through the store. I have no special knowledge but that's what I see.
I think that's why I see gamers with a game they want to get "to the table". These games are a pretty solid investment. Most are 1-2 years old and have lost their luster. I don't mind filling a spot.
Many of the stores are the "store" on Amazon and they will order of course.
The war games don't get much love in the stores but they are on the web.
Many companies have tapped into the off shore market to really splash up the product. (Think Wing Span.)
Games from 2-3 years ago don't attract the average gamer. 30 year old games are like the Game of Ur. I remember Wizard's Quest to be a good game but it would be tough to find players.
