Message:Spells rejuvenate at the start of each session. Only certain places afford the group healing and recovery. Though no one need truly die, since a single Cure Light Wounds may bring anyone back (to a few HPs). The dead may even be carted along. But each player only gets one character. So at death you must decide to roll anew or wait until the others find SANCTUARY. You do not get to swap and then swap back.
When the group reaches a SANTUARY, all fully heal. For instance, upon finding Rivendell. You can also drag dead bodies there for resurrection. At any time, a player may roll a new character to join the group (so long as combat has finished). New characters do not start with spells or magic items, unless previous treasure gets handed-back by the other players (shall we say, unlikely).
Be forewarned that in many cases SANCTUARY are only available once. Exceptions do apply but the elves of Middle Earth are leaving, so do not expect Rivendell and Lorien to stay safe havens for long.
Play advances in stages, Six Books. The players only have limited places to cross the region (major sites from Tolkien books). For instance, only in a few places can the party ford most rivers; horses and supplies would be lost. Each place may have a Dungeon or not; plus not all Underworlds need to be entered nor be fully resolved if begun. Flee or retreat are good options.
The campaign is designed to last twelve weeks. Depending upon how long it takes to resolve any single Dungeon of fights will determine how often the party may need to explore the full Dungeons. The goal is to reach level four by the end or maybe as high as level six. Expect big jumps in XP from the Event card flips. To reach level two is easy. To reach level four is tougher.
Yours,
IronRed
