Message:
Gamers (especially board and card gamers) want to demonstrate their Game Fu. Game Fu is the ability to memorize useless gaming minutia to spout it back at others. Oddly, the corresponding skill Game jitsu is the ability to ignore the facts spouted at them. It is a difficult cycle.
Plus, (said with love), many gamers have no sense of self reflection. While complaining about the length of a game, they will spend 20 minutes analyzing the benefit of a +1 to a roll.
I hope that is because that brain processing gives them joy (dopamine at least). But, it may just be a null cycle. The brain does the analysis and gets the 50/50 result, so the brain repeats getting the same result. Repeat until random mutation changes the result to 51/49.
Sometimes, you just have to throw the magic missile and be happy with it.
An Observation:
I see prominently in "The Crew" but in other places as well. The Gamer wants to feel that their decision was critical to the success of the activity. I would assume Pandemic and that style of game plays on that as well.
A sort of KOO FOR AYE thing. It worked because I was here.
Not to say the quiet parts out loud .... but .... I think the game is just balanced to create those dramatic moments frequently. Many of such moments get interpreted as "I did that".
You get your dopamine where you can.
Yours,
