Message:When I say Book Three, I am referring to the very same part you enjoy. Lots of whimsy. Ents lost the wives. Gandalf comes back and does not truly recall being Gandalf the Grey. Wormtongue has control by proxy. The tactical moves by Saruman and Théoden moving armies. (AI corrected my spelling and told me I confused a Roman emperor, Theodosius, with the story character. Duh, where do you think Tolkien got his names...from history.)
The narrative asides and poetry do not feel as forced in Two Towers, book Three. It was a nice quest and travel log.
Liked Shelob chapter too, real feeling of peril (but Frodo should have stayed dead there). Sam should be one corrupted at end, loses a finger to Gollum and sees his precious destroyed. Frodo was a weak figure but Elijah Wood did him proud.
Tolkien -- Some chapters were cool, most were meh. Every time I have gone back and tried LotR, I stop in Bilbo's party.
In White Box campaign it is also impossible to truly recreate the experience with large group. Mostly D&D means bring on the treasure and the pain. Balrog and Shelob are two mobs not to meet.
Yours,
