As a fan of the hero I see his fall as magic dementia. He used ring too much. When he tries to take the ring, like Galadriel, he resisted (despite complete desire for it).

Not sad scene but cautionary. Yet Frodo blundered already and more later by using the ring.

Riddle chapter in Hobbit is glorious. Bilbo did not need Sting but he armed himself when presented with the opportunity. He also compared himself to Shire Heroes of lore. When he would comment how Shire Folk this and Shire Folk that (do not adventure, makes us late for dinner) -- he was commenting on neighbors, not himself.
