The maps by themselves are not as "interesting" as they once were. Not because they aren't fun and convey information.
A "tactical" display of moving characters is good if you get to move characters and it matters. Counting squares is not that interesting.
Only where there is a decision made that has some consequence does it make sense.
When IronGreg was running his Tombs Adventure, we were all running to hide behand anything in the room that gave us cover.
That is consequence.
Someone should have had to run to block the way of the goblins from getting to the soft wizards in the back. Another consequence.
What if there was an exit in the back? Someone needs to run up there and prevent the baddies from escaping?
