Message:In the trenches of WWI, the situation was so confused that ofttimes the sergeants painted signs and placed them up to mark the enemy side of the trench. That way a soldier on-guard or waking would not hear a shot in the wrong direction, get turned around and start firing on his own forces. Could lead to a friendly retaliatory barrage of artillery, thinking that trench was captured.
The trenches also had road signs of familiar intersections so men could know, by back and forth, right angle turns, where they were in the broad entanglement of ditches. Carry this ammo to Piccadilly and Regent Street.
Sad and resilient.
