Message:Granted I was a kid, light weight. Yet to get my Canoe Merit Badge I had to flip a canoe and get back in, then paddle across the lake. Worse was the Rowing Merit Badge, where you had to flip a rowboat and then right the thing. Heavy was my memory. Plus when a rowboat flips it can take your head off.
I was thinking earlier this week that the two things we need to revitalize now are the Four-H and Boy Scouts. Kids today are not earthy and cannot survive. Maybe they don't have to? But why have no appreciation for anything but the present?
I found it rewarding as a ten year old to camp, as a thirteen year old to spend a night w/o a tent in the winter, as a seventeen year old to castrate cows. That last one, the man showing me how said too many males in a small field will injure each other and the heifers.
Again, I wish kids today knew something about life 200 years ago.
Yours,
IronRed
