Whenever possible, I've been declining rewards and the terminus Doom may still come.

Miss a few rolls and you bleed out.

The skills only add so that's a potential problem. A few good (bad) rolls and you are go mad. Mad I tellz ya.

But, it does solve the problem of missing a session. New guys are less likely to die.
