Or you simply ran. One could run across a place that no one else might ever see.
As you note, there was no website with the maps exposed. You had to go find them yourself.
The Cave Men who only carried clubs was a great monster even though they were actually other players.
I do remember that characters were skill based rather than class specific.
As I recall, the "dungeons" were not all instanced. Meaning multiple could be in them at the same time. I did enjoy that.
It did seem more alien.
