Begging for Ignobles .... we say it in jest ...
Message:
... but .... perhaps that is what causes the desire to more clearly define the ignoble.
In most cases, I find I'm reminding players to request their ignobles. Especially new players or players playing catch up.
Most players are excited to have completed the combat or situation and not thinking how to get advancement.
And, with 5 players at times, we're inserting in fights that maybe don't make sense.
Oh look, we took another Galley. Does no one seem to care?
So, the players aren't considering them at length. They are simply asking for the ignoble because they know they want one.
As I recall, originally, we gave options for many of the ignobles. "Maritime Management" was an alternate for Ship Engagements. The thought was that managing the vessel was more than just, I'm in charge of the Rum.
When we went to the new world, we had the ships defined down to how many pounds of nails and chickens we had. It took hours but it made the game bigger.
And "Strategy" was in place of a battle which was making a plan to assault something (like stealth into a castle). But, with a Q&D, that's not really a thing.
I've often suggested that the players should be the judge of their own ignobles. Red's style is to negotiate with them (knowing his players). But, I would recommend peer review and mockage which would correct an over zealous player.
Besides, a Swashbuckler dies with two wounds just like a Swab.
Too many ignobles would make the game about the ignobles rather than laughing at IronPax.
Yours,
IronConrad
