Berman said they interviewed 50 people to be the new Captain and Patrick Stewart is the one they picked. Yikes ... was it 50 soy boys with lisps and explosive dandruff?
As not a great fan of Next Gen, Picard does nothing for me. I attribute this to different life experiences. Sure, he has a deep voice and accent ... but .... if I had 50 dudes or dudettes to choose from ... he would not be the dude.
But, then this is a show about a blind pilot engineer, a chubby faux dashing first officer with shirt problems, a grating head shrinker, a whining child genius, a robot trying to be weak and irrational, and a cowardly lion Klingon, so it stays to form.
Forgive if my description seems negative ... I mean no offense -- they were just written that way. Just stating the obvious.
The parts they couldn't change remain great and it was great compared to the drek on television today. Just ... a significant step down to some. Your experiences may be different.
The mediocre over came the magic of the secret sauce for whatever reason.
The thing most interesting to me here was in reflection, Berman had no doubt that was the right dude. True, it put a few bucks in his pocket so if one measures success, there is that. We just live in different worlds.
But, was there not one heroic leading person available in the late 80's?
Yours,
IronConrad
