(I think the trick is he maintains a constant head at the top ... meaning the water stays at the same level at the top by the addition of more liquid and that the water is non-compressible.)

I got a chuckle from the whole lecture, though an hour may be beyond our attention spans these days.

This would be a challenge to set-up in real life with slight variations wonking up the results.

A dungeon group would not likely get this.
