Message:The Irish in WW2 are odd, since Northern Ireland is part of Great Britain. Ethnic Irish did serve in forces of Britain, US and Canada. The Republic did not pick a side.
What about the IRA? WIKI says, 5000 members were arrested and held for the war duration without trial by the Republic. That ended that fifth column movement for five years.
Irish ships traveled (mostly) free from U-Boat attack and did stop to rescue torpedoed Allied crews. Ireland itself was neutral and did not close any embassy. Russia blocked Irish entry into UN (post war).
Churchhill had said that if Ireland, like Norway, had posed any threat, he would have invaded. Spies of both sides were caught during the war. The Germans knew Irish weather reports were important. Hitler did not invade, as he was advised. Tactically the Germans could grab ports and another crossing point, yet the madman knew Irish Americans would have been incensed.
The rest may never be known as that war was very long ago.
An interesting tale that does not seem to be reflected in any telling of the war.
I agree that in terms of combatants, the eastern war was the war. This was Stalin vs Hitler. The rest was propaganda. Saving Private Ryan, indeed.
