Fungus growing in sandtrout poop.
Message:Sandtrout form pockets around water. Sandtrout poop interacts with native fungus to produce spice. When gas pressure from the reaction builds, there's a 'blow.'
Surviving, now spice saturated sandtrout merge into a small worm.
A dead worm sheds the surviving sandtrout back to the desert. Cycle begins anew.
Covering oneself in sandtrout turns you into Leto II, but that's a plot line for "Children of" and "God-Emperor" of Dune.
Dune should really be done as a prestige cable series, but I guess HBO or Amazon would only be interested in Heretics of Dune and Sandworms of Dune since those are the volumes with all the sex.
Or, God help us, they'd adapt those terrible Brian Herbert/Kevin J. Anderson books. Most arrogant author's note I've ever read... "Where there are discrepancies between our books and the original series, assume we are correct." No, Kevin and Brian, that's not how it works. Frank created the universe, his books set the "official canon," and yours are bland fanfiction. Go write another Star Wars novel. Dune is too deep for you two.
Yours,
IronMike
