Basically it set out to prove that modern abstract art objectively had merit. They conducted a survey comparing abstract paintings, some made by artists and a some made at random by the researchers. They found that people chose the work of the actual artist as more aesthetically pleasing more than statistical probability alone would predict.
Being distinguishable from random trash more than is statistically probable is a pretty low bar for art.
