Message:The music of trailer is terrible for fantasy tone. If that's the goal, a light humorous farce, I will need to be in that mindset. If I go in expecting Jackson, and they pump the Gen-X dad vibe Led Zepplin, I will need to be intoxicated, heavily.
Will avoid this in theaters and wait for streaming. Naptime through wretched.
D&D as an IP could be worth more than the games, if handled well. Imagine a Witcher where no one can carp about lore or source material, a way of making Conan without the name, LotR without a single hobbit (by that name) or Alice in Wonderland with a dirk-wielding Hermione. Let every writer and director take the theme where they see the desire. Small bites are better than epic.
But I'm guessing this will fall at the level of D&D in the last movie (2000) or worse the Conan (2011) with a few more familiar faces.
One last observation, the Chris Pine bard seems a dick. Which is okay, unless it is paired as it is with a serious sorcerer. Does anyone think Star Wars would have worked with a snarky Luke? Shoot for Guardians of the Galaxy, maybe where all are stupid-funny, or select dark fantasy where that comic relief is a ploy to con and then murder. AKA Duel scene in Thirteen Warriors.
As it shows, it's not my cup of D&D weak tea; I don't enjoy a fantasy chuckle.
Yours,
IronRed
