Message:The original edition is still the best. Yes, there were unbalanced combinations, but everyone had equal chances of building said unbalanced combinations and winning the game, hopefully while sealing an opponent in behind a solid stone block or keeping them running around the board as an idiot. That was the fun of the game. Sometimes you set up the rewarp-destroy wall-heave ho combo to inflict INFINITE damage on your opponent, and sometimes you're stuck punching the wall sealing you in because Slow Death won't let you pick any more cards without dying.
Balancing these things might make the game technically better from a game design point of view, but it doesn't make the game more fun. Then again, from a game design philosophy point of view, what are the purpose of game rules if not to enable the players to have fun? Nobody's playing Wiz-war as a training exercise.
Mike's foam die cheat was fun enough to be memorable, even if totally unbalanced.
Yours,
Iron Squires
