Commoners traveling at night were asking to be mugged and slain. There was literally a legal defense that the "other bloke ran into my knife." The deaths at soccer games were so high, the sport was banned for decades at a time.

Before Black Death, life was cheap (very). After, not so much. Scarcity of labors and artisans to keep nobles in a lifestyle brought broader enforcement and arrest for homicide.
