I was commenting today with the wife on how much I miss colorful cars. Reds, greens, blues, oranges, pink...60s and 70s had vehicles with personality. You could also find your car. Everything is earth tone and silver, cause we are too cool for school.
The heroes did not need to change the uniforms; yellow tights did not imply gay* (or what if it closeted did?) But black power armor made nerds feel tougher, and made the whole acceptable to the wider audience who would be perfectly happy watching biker movies again. Heroes changed instead of making new heroes.
Comics died not from stories but the audience changed media. That and once anything is pdf, it's stolen by the I can't afford $5 if I am to enjoy my iced milk-foam coffee at $3.50
crowd. Add $2 more for pumpkin spice. These kids today and choices.
Not that I'm bitter.
* -- Johnny Quest is the gayest show of the sixties, and the dog didn't need to speak to tell the tale.
