Events of Calamity Ensues end with "Continue with the next roll of Big D6 locked as To the Death." Happens as well for Cannonade events Howitzer and Round Shot.
In Calamity Ensues, you enter To the Death (combat). Even if you do not have the Liability, you will be brought into the fight. The Liability loses all Aces (a serious blow) entering that battle.
There can be a series of events before To the Death triggers. Most are delaying the inevitable, though Regroup does bring back Aces (used-up perhaps in a previous fight).
The event Skirmish Flank allows a chance of position without battle with a corps. It occurs statistically less than Big D6 Calamity Ensues.
But that said, I have no problem with your interpretation. Honestly, It's not bad flair. That only the characters of that Liability are forced to fight. It will make the game a bit easier. That's not always a bad thing.
